Today’s Dog Training Tip: Walk To Do An Errand You Would Normally Drive For With Your Dog

Many of us live in urban areas where there is so much right in the neighborhood. I know I have been guilty of saying things like “I could have walked or ridden a bike to do this faster than in a car”.

So capitalizing on that thought, this weekend we decided to do just that while out on a walk with the dog in support of our Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge. As it turns out there is a market about 1 1/2 mile away from our home. So we decided instead of going out for dinner this weekend to plan something really cool to make, walk to the market (with the dog), get the groceries, & come home as a project done together.

I know it doesn’t sound so enticing when considering we could have gone out to a restaurant and done nothing but eat… BUT here is why it was so great after we did it. First we had a great time together, walking & talking. The dog had a more than awesome time. Unlike us, a very small outing without even know where they are going makes a dog’s day a hundred times over. And the calories we ate for dinner & glass of wine were burned during the walk. Happy dog, happy people who got to eat and burn the calories in battle of the bulge so many of us people are feeling these days.

Many of the people who have joined our Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge are dealing with teaching their dog to walk nicely beside them. We have plenty of tips and tricks for that in our dog blogs and our online dog training website… or we have had people who so badly wanted to be able to walk with the dog that getting private lessons or having their dog join our exclusive dog training camps here in San Diego, Temecula, CA or Taos, NM. Then there are the people who have a dog that already walks or runs beside them… we want to give out ideas for both.

The important thing is to get out and do something with your dog in an exerciserly way! Weight loss is a big deal for people and getting the dog out to walk every day can make a dent you never thought could possibly be that easy in the war against fat. You’ll end up happy and your dog will be end up the well behaved best trained dog of the neighborhood.

It’s an exciting day here in the US. The inauguration of the 44th President Barack Obama. The country has pretty much stopped to watch it, in fact the statistics already say it will be the most viewed telecast ever! It is actually pretty cool. More people are there to see it live then ever. And more people are looking for change then ever. It’s a very hopeful, exciting day.

Now the big question. What dog is going to end up being our new White House dog? The decision should be made shortly. In the meantime we are polling all of our true “dog people” out there. The Obama girls have some allergies so the choice has been narrowed to a hypoallergenic breed. The choices: Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog.

Dog breeds certainly have their differences and as a family people should research those things before getting a dog. One of the things as professional trainers we do our best to get information out about since a new puppy becomes a family member so choosing the right one is important.

Apparently the media has reported the Obama’s have narrowed the White House dog down to two breeds. The Labradoodle or the Portuguese Water Dog. Being the dog people that we are here at K9 Coach we are wondering your thoughts on which dog it should be.

We work with many different breeds from very large dogs, small dogs… (we have a mini poodle in our dog training camp at the moment), & mixed breeds in our private lessons & dog training camp programs. There are surely traits that stand out in the different breeds and sometimes one breed will fit a family much better than another breed.

The Obama’s are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic since their daughters have some allergies that make a lot of dog hair a problem. Thus the narrowing of the two choices.

As we left Taos, NM & headed for San Diego, CA the Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge continues. Here are some last minute snow pictures with tips for walking your dog in the cold to add and then we’ll be on to some beach pictures and more dog training tips.

You can start our 21 Day Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge anytime, no worries… start from today and then you can go back to blog post done recently and keep on track. The best thing to do though is… just do it! It will be good for your dog and it will be good for you.

The tip for today is how to get your dog to sit and wait. Most people call that “stay”, but when we are out walking and in motion, sometimes things like “wait” come out. In either case a very helpful thing to train your dog to do when walking on a regular basis is to sit & wait. So, how do you get your dog to be trained like that… it takes one thing… practice. And then some more practice.

The very first mistake most make when trying to get the dog to stay is to start practicing when there is a lot of distraction around without first teaching how to wait or stay without any distraction. (As you can see in the video… there is isn’t a lot of distraction going on… a good way to start. Though make sure to start with a bit of a shorter distance.)

The next mistake made in training your dog to sit and stay is adding WAY too much distance too fast. I know that sounds very simple, at the same time being the over achievers that most of us are we tend to go this route too early on. We expect our dogs to know “stay from 10 feet away the same as they did that one time we got them to do it from only 2 feet away. It’s an quite clearly a different picture to the dog and once we break it down to that it’s easy to train your dog at both distances..in sequence.

The big dog training tip of the day is practicing getting your dog to sit and stay from just 2 feet away with very little distraction. Practice that until your dog starts really showing “getting it” signs, then on to longer distances or more distraction.

Ok, so now we are into day 3 of the Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge. Granted, your dog may still be a bit excited, may be pulling on the leash a some. But those are all things that will come with a little more practice and some more of our tips.

We have a replay of our leash training session available for you to watch. If you are having problems with your dog pulling on the leash, review that and of course contact us if you have more questions.

Today on your 20 minute walk with your dog, practice turns. By that I mean when you take off out the door your dog is usually headed off ahead of you in the direction he thinks you are going to be heading. Instead do some immediate turns and have your dog follow you. It doesn’t have to be an “about-face” either. Do some 45 degree turns.

The idea is to get your dog to pay attention to you. When your dog anticipates that you are just going to head off in the same direction, straight forward, there is no looking at you for direction.

If you require attention from your dog right from the get go, your walk is going to be a lot better the whole time.

For many people the challenge in walking their dog every day is sometimes getting past the irritating feeling that your dog is pulling your shoulder right out of its socket! It’s just a constant battle. No fun.

K9 Coach has a couple of little tricks to help your dog understand how to walk on a leash without pulling and we are happy to share them with you so that you can get out enjoy your dog. We do live webcasts for free on how to train your dog, and we are here for all your questions.

Our 21 Day Challenge: Walk Your Dog Every Day is in our 2nd day. If you just started, not a problem, you can follow along from right here. Or feel free to start back on the blogs for earlier tips.

Today as get your dog ready for that walk, first work on being calm before you ever leave the door. In order to do this, have your dog “sit”, and if that is difficult, not to fear. Breathe, calm down, and wait it out. “Sit” and a little help with finger pressure just above the tail area on your dog’s back into a sit… then some praise, calmly.

Should your Wonderdog jump right back up, no worries. Do the same procedure above until you get that few seconds of a sit, then you can proceed with the walk. Dogs do what works. Set the precedent of being calm before you go every time. This will quickly become a habit.

The first day of our 21 Day Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge finds one of our dog training clients taking it seriously getting out for the walk with their Belgian Malinois Morgan even though they spent the day traveling to Cedar City, UT from San Diego, CA.

This breed of dog always needs a little extra exercise, and the fact the Morgan has had such good dog training means she is awesome on leash and off leash. Once arriving in Cedar City, UT in all the snow her owners put her new outfit on, a dog coat and doggie boots and off they went. Two projects, walk the dog, & shovel the driveway so they could park.

It’s a bit different climate from the San Diego beach runs that Morgan is used to, thus the new dog outfit. Doesn’t she look awesome?!

As you can see from the pictures all the activity found both Morgan and her owner Roch of Multisports.com very happy with themselves.

It’s already a week into the New Year, and the new exercise program has already been given second thoughts right? No, stop. Let’s make this fun this year. Let’s make this about going out and having some fun with the dog, AND getting into a great exercise routine.

Take the 21 Day Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge!

Seriously, it is true that if you practice something for 21 days in a row you can make it a habit. So, lets all get some exercise for you and the dog. Most of us dog owners know that we really should get the dog out to walk every day. But instead we do things that seem to take the place of it. Like throw the ball for the dog 10 times or so, or even take the beloved family dog to the “dog park”, stand there and watch him run around… or not.

The great thing about this challenge is if you do it, you will see great improvement in your dog’s behavior. That’s right, by go on a minimum 20 minute walk a day with your dog you can get the calm, happy trained dog you had hoped for.

Why is it different to take the dog on a walk then throw the ball or let him run around the dog park?

Well, its simply a matter of leadership. Walking with your dog allows you to practice heeling, walking (or running) with a loose leash, and the attention of your dog to sit at street corners, stop when you do and go when you do.

There’s lots of cool stuff to do with your dog on a simple 20 minute walk and if you do it daily (starting with our 21 day challenge) you will feel great as well.

So, starting tomorrow, get up, get the dog, and get out and walk 20 minutes for the first day of the 21 Day Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge.

It’s just after the holidays and time to settle into the gifts and what to do with them! Getting a new puppy or dog for Christmas is a great gift because it keeps on giving…
