Meet Dozer, she is at K9 Coach San Diego and Temecula puppy training camp. Dozer is a mixed breed, female puppy, 4 months old and full of non-stop energy. She wants to chew on everything and liked to grab small kids by the sleeve and wrestle them to the ground!

Rough play is common in puppy behavior and does not “go away by itself”. Puppies lose their baby teeth (which are very sharp and needle like) and get their adult teeth ages 4-6 months. Along with their strong drive to play, they have an urge to chew in this teething period. Make sure you give your puppy safe toys made in the USA such as Nylabone, Kong and select made in the USA Dog Planet toys, rated for strong chewers, if you have a puppy who tears everything up.

Give the toy to your puppy again and again, when they try to chew on things they shouldn’t. Puppies have such a short attention span and are so easily distracted. They require patient and repetition in order to learn the right thing to do.

The biggest mistake a new puppy owner can make when training to chew only their toys, is to give them a rawhide chew! Countless puppies and dogs die every year due to rawhide consumption, but the big retailers still have their shelves stacked full of rawhide toys, it seems crazy, but it’s true, it is not against any federal regulation for this and several other harmful items sold to our puppies by big corporations with an eye only on profit.

Puppy training camp at K9 Coach San Diego and Temecula provides puppy household manners, potty training, crate training, basic obedience, nutritional and safety counseling in addtion to training the family how to have fun and freedom with their puppies new found skills!

Dozer is doing great at puppy training camp and her family already has her on the right healthy puppy food.

At K9 Coach San Diego & Temecula we provide dog obedience training camps that produce results! 5 month old Poo-chi, Zoey was headed in the wrong direction. She nipped a little too hard & way too often. Her play was too wild for the kids and she barked incessantly if you didn’t pick her up hold and pet her. Last but not least, Zoey needed potty training.

This little dog is typical of what I see as a dog trainer where the people have good intentions, but didn’t realize what they where doing was encouraging bad behavior. When Zoey’s vet told her family they needed help, fortunately, they listened. The sooner you get help for a dog behavioral issue the better. If left unchecked, nipping and rough play from a pup can turn into seriously aggressive dog behavior.

This Carlsbad, CA family is very happy they invested in K9 Coach dog camp. The kids can now hang out and play with Zoey, her behavior is calm and fun now that she has focus and direction in her life. Zoey is a very lucky dog too, because her family is walking her on the leash and practicing her new found skills as a part of their daily life and she is happier than she has ever been!

No matter what age your dog is, we can help you improve your relationship with your dog! Here are some of the housebreaking tips you can use when potty training your dog!

Supervise, supervise, and supervise.

Use a crate; this is a safe den for your dog and much easier to clean than carpet!

Use a couple of pieces of kibble to entice and reward your dog with the crate.

Dogs should be able to sit up and have their head just clear top of the crate and have just enough room to turn around and lie down, think small den not a whole house.

Tap on the crate and calmly say quiet if they fuss, give them an opportunity to settle down.

Feed your dog all meals in their crate, so they will associate something they really like with the crate. Pick up any food not eaten in 10 to 15 minutes.

Use controlled feeding, no free feeding. Take them to go potty outside after they are done eating. If they do not have a bowel movement, return them to the crate and try again in 10 to 15 minutes until they accomplish their task.

If your dog evacuates in the crate AND the crate is not too big, get a second back-up crate. Clean your dog and the crate and try again, if you don’t give in, they will!

Do not put water in the crate. They should only spend 2 hours max in the crate or exposed to extreme heat or cold when crated. A pup 8 weeks and even up to 16 weeks old cannot hold “it” more than 2 hours. I offer them water on their way outside or you can offer it to them outside depending on their behavioral patterns.

If you work long hours… get help with a dog walking service or friends.

Tether the dog to you with a 3-4 foot or so parachute cord, use a drag leash or hang onto a leash OR put your dog in their crate when you cannot directly supervise them.

Make sure your dog just fits in the crate, if it’s a pup, block off part of the crate, until they grow to fit the crate.

Make sure you give your dog every opportunity to go potty outside.

Use the same phrase when you take your dog outside, praise them with the same phrase with every success.

Do not punish your dog for mistakes: If you see them in the act, use a firm “NO” pick them up & take them to the place they should go, if they do finish their business outside be sure to praise them.

Do not punish your dog for mistakes: If you DON”T see them, it is your fault, clean up the mess and try to do a better job of supervising your dog.

Besides praise and petting, give them a small play session & supervised free time in the house after success.

Keep the crate within hearing distance when sleeping, if your dog wakes up and makes noise, take them outside to potty and return them to the crate. Limit water late evening, after dinner depending on the activity of the dog

Take them outside to potty whenever:

You take them out of their crate.

Before you put them in their crate.

Wake up from sleeping.

Eat a meal.

Drink a bunch of water.

Play excitedly.

It can take several weeks to the worst case I’ve heard of several months to potty train your dog, so most important don’t give up and remember it is your job to train your dog. If you are having problems get professional help, dogs often don’t know what we want, because you are not showing them in the right way!

The upcoming season presents numerous instances for increased anxiety during a flurry of holiday-related activities. As you’ve probably seen time and time again, your sweet companions can be rattled by your own elevated levels of stress. Fortunately, there are some specific steps you can take to cope with the demands for your time and energies, to make the holidays merry for you and your pets.

Be sure to plan ahead, to reduce the likelihood of last-minute decisions, which often infuse activities with an unnecessary sense of urgency.

Take advantage of online shopping, so you don’t have to leave your companion animals alone for extended periods of time. And try to take care of multiple errands during each trip. You’ll not only save gas (and therefore, money), you’ll also spend less time away from home.

Consider planning more events at home, so your companion animals can be a part of the celebration. If you plan to have many visitors in your home, consider keeping your dog on lead inside the house. You’ll be able to keep an eye on her or him at all times, reducing the likelihood of possible injury amidst a gaggle of unfamiliar feet. Additionally, keeping them close-by may reduce your pet’s level of stress. Alternatively, if you have an anxiety-prone dog or cat, consider confining them to a safe zone (like a bedroom, or even their crate) for the duration of in-home celebrations.

Leave a note on the front door reminding visitors not to allow your pet to run out of the house. Nothing puts a damper on festivities like turning a holiday party into a search party.

To cope with heightened expectations of visiting family members, take time to consider how you might simplify the preparation and execution of seasonal parties and gatherings. For example, instead of a menu of eight items, prepare only five. Or, combine family and colleague get-togethers. By simplifying, you’ll help to eliminate some performance pressure off yourself, and thereby, your whole family.

Don’t try to do everything yourself, but rather assign specific tasks to other family members, even your children. You may be surprised at how seriously they take on the new responsibilties, and they’ll learn a lot in the process.

Remember that nothing is perfect – striving for perfection in all of your celebrations can have the unfortunate effect of increasing stress, not only for you, but for the rest of your family.

By implementing just a few of these measures, you can reduce stress for you and your companion animals.

Long before we were Dog Training for San Diego County we tried many dog foods & feeding methods over the years searching for what’s best for our loyal companions. We have dogs in their teens who are still healthy, active & happy, due to proper training, exercise & maintaining a holistic diet.
When contaminated dog food became a problem in the US, we were not surprised. What also not surprising to us, is when a year or so later the same contaminants were found in human food supplies. This chemical is what ”laminates” your laminated furniture, Melamine, that tough plastic type coating on your cheap shelves & cabinets… is in our human & dog food supply.
Do you think your dog food is safe? If your dog food company claims it is safe now, so what? Do you realize all of the bad stuff most dog food is made of and it’s perfectly legal? Are you just going to forgive & forget when dogs have died & suffered horrible illness, so these companies could maximize profits?
In an effort to help all dog owners provide their pets with safe holistic foods in order to build a strong foundation for a long and healthy life, we are proudly offering Life’s Abundance Premium Health Foods for Pets!
This dog food includes only human-quality ingredients, to ensure the health and well being of dogs and cats. It contains no wheat, corn, potentially harmful chemical additives, artificial colors or flavors. You can be confident that you are feeding your dog advanced nutrition. Choose a food that reflects your love for your companion.

Dogs learn in pictures, if you get the dog’s attention and show them the correct picture, reward the right behavior, then repeat that correct picture/reward again and again, your dog will learn to connect a certain action with a command word. Experts say a dog can take up to 2,000 times of the correct action to truly understand a command.

This is why our dog boot camps are so successful, we only take a few dogs at a time and use method called “flooding”, in which your dog receives hours of training each day, seeing the correct picture in daily dog/people situations.

At K9 Coach Dog Obedience Camps we use affection & verbal praise as our number one reward for proper dog behavior. Running a close second is playtime with toy as a reward for correct dog behavior. As a responsible dog owner, you need to be wary of the numerous dangerous toys on the shelf at the pet store.

We highly recommend spending a little more when it comes to your dog (and yourself) and buy quality. When it comes to dog products I strongly encourage you to buy made in the USA toys & holistic food, with human grade ingredients from the USA.

Here our my top toy recommendations:

Kong (but leave out the treats, my favorite is their new ropes through a Kong)

Nylabone (even if you have a small dog my favorite is their “Galileo”)

Planet Dog (any size Orbee is the top pick here, but they have tons of great toys)

Katies Bumpers (I love the new recycled fire hose throws)

For those of you who would like to use our years of experience training dogs to do the right thing, the easy way, our Dog Obedience Training DVD will show you how to train your dog, at home with our help! You’ll get great support through Live Webinars and our private online learning center. K9 Coach provides simple dog behavioral solutions: exclusive dog training camps or training you can do at home! Woof!
