You are what you think about. You are what you eat. How many times have you heard these things? Many times most likely. Actually practicing it is another thing.

I found this fascinating quote today:

Since the dawn of the printed word, the consciousness of society has been shaped by those who dispense the information. Yet this generation stands alone in having the democratic power to dispense its own information and shape its own consciousness. However, as much power as we have to distribute our own media, we hold an even greater power yet, the power that we have had all along, the power to control which media we entertain. Now more than ever, our consciousness is ours to shape. Let us shape it onto something magnificent.modernhippiemag.com, Your Daily Groove – Shaping Our Consciousness, Feb 2010

Dogs are part of our lives to the point that we look for things to be able to take them with us. We have to face the fact that though San Diego is dog friendly...

Hillcrest Pup Crawl

Dogs are part of our lives to the point that we look for things to be able to take them with us. We have to face the fact that though San Diego is way up on the 5 star paw count in dog friendly places and events, there are also many venues where our dogs are not allowed to go.

Getting out and getting active with your dog not only improves your relationship with your dog but gets you out and active. This could be one of their biggest favors to you over a lifetime. Promoting your own health and fitness.

One of the reasons dogs owners end up being more active, fit, and able to lose weight is it becomes really fun to do things with the dog. Activity doesn’t seem like such a chore.

Picking something new to go to also creates an inspiring, fun reason to go. January and February 2010 dog event calendars are looking good in San Diego.

Here are a few ideas to pick from:

San Diego dog beaches. Which San Diego dog beach is the best? Ocean Beach, Coronado or Del Mar?

San Diego, one of the most dog friendly urban cities there is, has an advantage simply in the fact that there is more than one dog beach available. If you are a pet photographer just heading out to one of the beaches on a weekly basis would provide material for months to come.

Being a professional dog trainer who encourages getting out and having fun with your dog as the best way to a well trained dog, dog beach is on the radar often. When the story broke this morning on NBCSanDiego.com about Golden Local: Best Dog Beach, I just had to chime in.

Their survey asks you to vote which San Diego Dog Beach is better… Coronado or Ocean Beach? Well, San Diego dog friendly orientated as I am, the elephant in the room is what about Del Mar Dog Beach?

Go ahead, give us your on both websites (and feel free to leave a comment about your dog beach)…. but lets be fair to San Diego County and the many options to take dogs off leash, have some fun, get some exercise and find the balance in life. Which dog beach do you like best?

The New Year, which some are referring to as the new decade, has rolled around already. 2010 is here and in full swing already. Time to put that action plan for a new you into action. And the goes for your dog who is a big part of the family.

One of the big rules of thumb at K9 Coach for all of our private dog training clients and our dog campers is “a tired dog is a good dog”. Exercise is key to better health and better behavior. *True of people too.

This year we’ve decided to integrate things into dog training so that everyone ends up living the good life. Let’s face it, focusing on basic dog training obedience is boring for you and certainly your dog picks up on the lack luster participation in the exercises.

Walking or running with your dog can be the missing link to not only a well trained dog, but a happier, healthier, fit you! A built in training partner for you and the dog makes it more fun to participate in things like a local 5K, 10K or active event.

San Diego is quite the dog friendly city with many events where your dog is welcome.

Signing up for a 5K is a way to give yourself something to focus on while you are establishing an exercise, diet and nutrition routine that you can stick to.

A training plan written out for you increases your chances of enjoying the exercise, knowing what to do and how to do it safely. Give yourself something to focus on while you are establishing your exercise, diet and nutrition routine. Stick with your new plan plan by signing up for our Canine Cross Training: Running your 1st 5K!

Wag more this year while you are doing something that is honestly good for you and for your dog. Go outside and get some exercise, drink a lot of water, and constantly picture your life, your dog’s life, and those your surround yourself with as balanced.

Time for a new you. Run a 5K with your dog as a training partner.

Take some lessons from the dog and wag more.. then make your list for 2010… this is your year.

2009 is only a few hours from being behind us. On to 2010 and what many put hope in a new beginning. Its really a great thing to do and New Year’s resolutions aren’t cliche anymore. Its a time to set goals, go for a better way of being, thinking, and doing.

Number one on everyone’s list should be:

Wag more.

Yep. Even if you aren’t a dog owner it’s a good rule to live by. Of course dog owners know exactly what that means. Dogs tend to wag at the slightest hint of possibility. For the most part, those who wag more have more joy, harmony, gratitude, and peace of mind than those who spend their time barking about whatever is presented them on a moment to moment basis.

Along with wag more the highest of priorities should be health and fitness. Without it the chances of your happiness and self fulfillment becoming a reality are much smaller. Doesn’t matter if you are person or dog, if you don’t feel good, if you are overweight, if you can’t get out and move its not a fun place to be.

So here they are. Top priorities for 2010. You and the dog:

Wag more.

Get fit.

Loose those extra pounds.

Find peace of mind.

For the dog finding peace of mind and wagging more are easier than for most of the thinking two legged communities we live in. Make it a point to take a lesson from our four legged friends there on a daily basis. Wag more.

Getting fit and losing extra pounds…. well…. those are more under the two legged friends control and our dogs rely on us for the opportunities to join in the movement on those fronts.

The truth of the matter is it is much easier to accomplish weight loss and getting fit when you have a loyal training partner to rely on. Perfect for dog owners. You’ll never find a more loyal training partner, ready to go at any moment’s notice, never an excuse and always with a big inviting wag of excitement to go.

Awesome. So we have established that weight loss and getting fit are big on the New Year’s resolution list. We’ve also established that the chances of it actually happening are high when you have someone to rely on.

Perfect.

Then this is for you. Your dog is already willing to sign up. Done.

Now all you need another coach to inspire you, provide a simple program you can follow with the help of your dog, add a little encouragement here and there and send you what to do every week.

Done.

How to Run Your 1st 5K with your dog as your most loyal training partner is for you.

It’s easy, its fun, you get to do it with your dog and it will work.

Click to find out more about Running Your 1st 5K with Your Dog as Your Training Partner.

Even if you don’t want to actually sign up for a 5K you’ll enjoy all the benefits of a training program written for you and your dog to follow. Getting encouragement from a coach and 9 time Ironman finisher that knows dogs, knows how to train for fitness and has found success in coaching others to their best.

Go ahead. Make 2010 your year. Look good, feel good, get fit, and wag more.

As a professional dog trainer in San Diego, CA with the belief that exercise for people and dogs can fix a lot of things in anyone’s life, it became clear the need to encourage people in ways to get out and get started… and then stick with it. It is such a rewarding feeling to see people make the change to a healthy fit lifestyle.

Here’s a great training partner for someone who is committed to exercise as a lifestyle and at the same time wants somebody to also be committed and wagging to go every single time!

Meet Dozer, 9 months old and most likely a Lab/Pit Mix although her paperwork shows this dog as a Border Collie/Lab mix., female, spayed and micro chipped. She is friendly with dogs, and unknown with cats. Dozer was well trained with all commands, house/potty training, crate trained and proper leash walking from 18 weeks old. She’s now older and ready to add the running to her workouts as well but will be completely happy with walking…. a lot of walking or running, or both.

Her original family did not have a commitment to exercise for themselves and that meant the puppy lost out. Dozer is a great dog, but has a couple of things that are important to her continuing to be an awesome dog; exercise being at the top of that list.

The family “felt bad” because as it turns out they didn’t realize what kind of energy they had signed up for and were just looking for a little puppy that would be fun for the kids. Unfortunately it’s a mistake easily made and without intention. Never-the-less not researching what kind of temperament or personality type a dog has first, many people are mismatched with a dog choice.

Dozer needs a family or individual committed to continued exercise including 1 plus hours per day of controlled exercise (walking/jogging). She is trained to jog on a treadmill, potty trained, crate trained and knows:

Commands:
Place (Although she believes the sofa is “her” place)
Sit, down, wait, off (no jumping up or bothering people/other dogs),
Out (drop anything in mouth),
Quiet
Let’s go (for recall and on leash prompting)
Let’s go potty

She knows the previous mentioned commands by hand signals, snapping fingers and voice command combined. She has been fostered with Carla, a professional trainer, since August 14, 2009.

She is trained with a remote collar on a low-level or using the vibrating pager and can do well leash walking with this training collar. Her adoption fee of $100 includes the collar and additional lessons training lessons with the family or individual.

She’s a way cool dog and really has the ability to be not only your best training partner but your best friend as well.

Godiva, a 10 month old Pocket Beagle, is one of the most adaptable dogs I know. One of the biggest keys to a well balanced dog is getting clear direction in combination with exposure to as many people, dogs, places, and things as possible.

Godiva has a serious head start compared to most puppies her age. She came to her San Diego Dog Training Camp this time to move her along in her quest to be an excellent therapy dog and she proved to be one of the best candidates ever to sign up.

She traveled to That’s My Dog located in Wisconsin to assist me with our Advanced Professional Dog Trainers Business & Personal Development Course as well as E Palooza in it’s 5th year hosting professionals bringing fresh ideas to professional dog trainers.

Godiva traveled by plane with me and managed to get even the TSA crew to smile. She was my teaching assistant and sat on her “park it” spot or dog bed while I presented. She was introduced to agility, met the neighborhood cows, went downtown and walked in the distraction of lots of people, dogs and activities. She learned to “stay” in the distraction of about anything and even mastered a few tricks like “give 5” and “play dead”. She’ll rival that dog on the Letterman Show any day of the week!

Sit, stay, a strong recall, and walking nicely on a leash allows a dog like Godiva to go and do just about anything a dog or her family can imagine. She’s ready to go back to her family, soccer games, rides in the car, and much more as well as being the entire family’s best friend.

Godiva went home today from dog training camp after returning to San Diego from our trip to Wisconsin. I miss her terribly. She’s become my little protege and has gone so many places with me its odd not to have her around. Yet, I know back at home with 4 kids and two parents with a very active lifestyle, she’s fallen right into stride and has a fabulous life.

Good girl Godiva… and I look forward to updates of her great life.
